CLASSIFICATION OF SURVEYS

CLASSIFICATION OF SURVEYS

Surveying may be classified in four different ways, they are disscussed as under

1. CLASSIFICATION BASED ON INSTRUMENTS USED:

a. CHAIN SURVEYING

1.           Simplest type of surveying

2.           Only linear measurements are taken with a chain or tape

3.           No angular measurements are taken

4.           Preferred when high accuracy is not required

b. COMPASS SURVEYING

1.           Horizontal angles are measured with the help of magnetic compass taking bearings

2.           Linear measurements are also taken with chain or tape.

3.           More accurate than chain survey

c. PLANE TABLE SURVEYING

1.        A map is prepared in field while viewing the terrain and after determining the

     directions and lengths of lines

2.        Advantage is that taking measurements and plotting are done simultaneously

3.        It is less accurate survey
d. LEVELLING
1.           Levelling instrument is used for determination of relative elevations of various
    points  in vertical  plane

2.           Extremely important in most of the Engineering works
e. THEODOLITE SURVEY
        Theodolite survey is classified into

1.           Traverse survey
2.           Triangulation survey
TRAVERSE SURVEY
1.     Various stations form a polygon

2.     Horizontal angles are measured with theodolite

3.     Linear measurements are made with tape

TRIANGULATION SURVEY

1.           The lines form a system of triangles

2.           The base line is measured accurately and the lengths of all other lines are computed from the angle

f. TACHEOMETRY SURVEY

1.           Tacheometer is a special type of theodolite fitted with stadia diaphragm

2.           By taking staff readings, distances can be calculated

g. PHOTOGRAMMETRY SURVEY

1.           Photogrammetry is a science of taking measurements with the help of photographs

2.           Used for obtaining topographical details of areas which are difficult to reach
 h. E.D.M SURVEY

1.           Three sides of each triangle are measured accurately with Electronic Distance
Measuring instruments

2.           Angles are computed indirectly from the known sides of the triangles
